Calvin was born in San Francisco, the second son of a career army man. Moving around the states with some frequency until his high school years, the family settled in San Luis Obispo, California. While attending high school he dated a Christian girl. During the summer he attended church several times. Then one evening she came over to his house and they began to talk about whether they would go to heaven if they died. He realized his answer was no, so he walked over to the pastor’s house and Calvin asked him to lead him to Christ. That was July 27th, 1969. Once out of high school, he attended Western Baptist Bible College, now known as Corban College, in Salem, Oregon. Graduating with a BS degree in Bible, he left for a brief job in Montana with a new wife, Joan, and one U-Haul truck containing all their possessions, including their car!
Returning to Washington nearly a year later, several different jobs kept him employed until he took a position with a medical clinic. Thus began a 25 year career in health care. In 2003, a change in the wind was blowing Calvin’s direction. Their oldest daughter was ministering at an international mission school in Germany and he became interested in the school and dorm life in particular. The following year, he felt God’s call to leave the comfortable life of gainful employment they enjoyed and minister at Black Forest Academy as dorm parents. It took nearly another year to first convince his wife Joan of God’s call and secondly, complete the requirements of their mission board to take up this ministry. This is the beginning of their second year and it has all the promise of a year filled with excitement and blessing of God at work in the life of young men from around the globe.
Joan was born in eastern Washington, living in the same area and the same house for many years. After high school, a friend rather insisted she attend a youth camp where she accepted Christ as her Savior the second night. That same fall, she attended Western Baptist Bible College, now Corban College, and four years later she was a married graduate. Following her husband for the next 33 years involved moving too many times to count the first 10 years of marriage and the birth of their three children.
Settling in Yakima 20 years ago, they have enjoyed the fellowship of West Side and are more than grateful for the years of ministry to the family. Their family includes daughters Jodi and Jenni, and son Jeff & wife Sarah and their son Ashton.
