For nearly 40 years Wendell, a medical doctor, and Marjorie, a nursing science educator, have lived and worked in the Borneo rain forest. In 1964, after two years of missionary preparation with CBInternational they traveled to the island of Java to study the Indonesian national language. Twelve months later their medical missionary careers began at the Borneo village of Bamboo River in a temporary, make-shift facility, without electric power, running water, or trained staff. Bethesda Mission Hospital is the healthcare ministry developed by CBInternational missionary doctors, nurses and technicians. Wendell serves as senior medical surgical consultant, seeing patients and performing surgery together with Christian Indonesian doctors and nurses and career and short-term medical missionaries. Margie mentors the director of the Bethesda Rural Health Evangelism Team and consults with the German Christian relief agency that funds this ministry. She is also an advisor to the leadership and faculty of the Bethesda Academy of Nursing. Wendell and Margie hope to become “finishers,” seeking a new career rather than a traditional retirement mode. Their full-time involvement as medical missionaries with CBInternational came to a close on January 31, 2005. Since then they are involved in sending missionaries and in organizing group mission trips to expand the outreach of Bethesda to other parts of Borneo and to the other islands of Indonesia.
